All disks fail (but OK after power cycle). 5.3.12 T3

Hi
I have a ReadyNAS NV+ v2 with 4x2GB HDD.
It has been fine on 5.3.12 T3 but twice in the last week I have noticed in the morning (it auto-shutdowns at 2am) on the LCD screen the message cycles through saying Disks 1-4 have failed.
I have to unplug/plug and it resets fine.
Logs emailed
Thanks
Andy

Thanks for the logs.
Your disks need a firmware update.
First backup your data.
Then update the firmware on your disks to CC3D firmware.

Re: All disks fail (but OK after power cycle). 5.3.12 T3
Thanks.
I see this is rather difficult to obtain, i've submitted a case to Seagate, let's see what happens!

Use the seagate firmware downloader - if it thinks you are running the current firmware for your drive then you likely are.

Hi
It says I am but there are other posts in these forums and the Seagate forums that say they only give out CC3D if you ask (and sometimes battle) for it.

The old buggy drive firmware is known to lead to problems like this.
We have a clear note in the compatibility list that you need disks with CC3D firmware or newer.
SeaGate is well aware of this situation and I feel they should make it a lot easier to get the CC3D firmware.

Thanks.
I guess the problem is you check the compatilbity list before buying the drive, and CC3D didn't exist then.
I don't think you would (certainly I wouldn't) instinctively check the compatbility list again after purchase.

Re: All disks fail (but OK after power cycle). 5.3.12 T3
Thanks for your help.
I got hold of CC3D and flashed the drives.
I notice that 2 of them (on CC3C) were reporting ridiculously high command timeout rates, whicih have come down to between 0-3 on CC3D.
Cheers

Re: All disks fail (but OK after power cycle). 5.3.12 T3
Hi
Sorry to trouble you again, but the problem is back.
(mdgm kindly PM'd me some advice and I explained I was actually upgrading the array to 4x3TB discs which I have done, the CC3Ds are in an NV+ now)
I looked at the NAS this morning and it said 'Vol C is dead' on the LCD and all the lights where blinking madly!!
Pulled the power cable and pluging back in and turning on, all is fine.
Looking at the logs it looks like it powered up OK at 7am (auto-shutdown at 2am, auto-on at 7am) but I can't see what the problem was.
Logs emailed.
Thanks
Andy

Do you have a backup of your data now?

Re: All disks fail (but OK after power cycle). 5.3.12 T3
Thank you.
The backup finishes tomorrow so will reset tomorrow night. Do you want me to do anything else after the reset but before I start writing data back to it??

Re: All disks fail (but OK after power cycle). 5.3.12 T3
Hi
Problems are back!!
Backed up. Factory reset. Restored data.
Yesterday evening look at the LCD screen - 'Spinning down...' and the LEDS 1-4 are flashing rapidly in turn and the activity and power buttons are flashing rapidly.
GUI is not accessible. It is pingable. Power button doesnt work
Had to pull cable. Restarted fine.
Logs emailed. Grateful for advice.

Perhaps disable spindown for a while, and see if the problems disappear.
