Backing up via rsync ssh failing since upgrade to 6.4.1

Hello I have a Readynas RN104 and since i updated to 6.4.1 all of my backups are failing. I backup via SSH rsync to another rsync enabled nas (dlink). Nothing has changed since install last year but since the upgrade they all fail with the following.

Backup Job Name: Video Backup
Backup Job Type: Incremental
Protocol: rsync+ssh
Backup Source: [Videos]/Home Movies
Backup Destination: [remote:rsync+ssh]/dlink://mnt/HD/HD_a2/Backup-Videos
Backup Start Time: Fri Dec 4 2015 21:07:53
Backup Finish Time: Fri Dec 4 2015 21:08:01
Backup Status: Fail: error in data stream. Check remote rsync server settings.

Failed to run rsync, return rc 3072 (12)
'rsync' command returns rc=3072

rsync: on remote machine: -vlOJogDtrxe.iLsfx: unknown option
rsync error: syntax or usage error (code 1) at main.c(1431) [server=3.0.7]
rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (0 bytes received so far) [sender]
rsync error: error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) at io.c(226) [sender=3.1.1]

I've tried to recreate the jobs but they still fail?

Any suggestions?

thanks.

Hello hoppo1,

Have you checked the permissions of the source and destination? May be try creating a new share on the NAS and create a test rsync backup going to the other non-ReadyNAS.

Thanks for your response. I get same result with new shares. I suspect rsync got updated in the new release and now the two are incompatable,

Hello hoppo1,

Will it be possible for you to create a new one for a test but this time destination is the ReadyNAS and Dlink is the source?

Can you also try creating a simple backup job with source and destination test shares of the ReadyNAS?

Also, did you upgrade to the production 6.4.1, or are you running one of the betas?

There was a fix in 6.4.1-RC3

[RC3] Fix premature timeouts on rsync backup jobs.

Re: Backing up via rsync ssh failing since upgrade to 6.4.1

I'm running the version that my readynas prompted to download 6.4.1.

I can backup to the Readynas and I can backup from the readynas if I set my other device to pull the data rather than the readynas pushing it.

I will look to pull backups in the interim if there is a pending fix rather than going for the beta.

thanks.

6.4.1 is released, not beta.

However, if you are using the antivirus service, then I suggest postponing the 6.4.1 upgrade for a bit.

Re: Backing up via rsync ssh failing since upgrade to 6.4.1

Hi,

For what it's worth:

  • I had the same exact issue after upgrading from 6.4.0 to 6.4.1.
  • Both backup client (RN104) and backup servers (RN102, multiple of them) are Readynas gears.
  • After a number of tests and tries, I gave it a try to downgrade the client to 6.4.0... and bingo, works again !
  • I have one test RN102, which I upgraded to 6.4.1, then defined a new backup task. This was working fine. However, defining a new backup task on the other backup clients (which were clients prior to the upgrade) didn't help.

Conclusion: it seems that backup settings and info are screwd up after upgrading backup clients to 6.4.1 (although SSH and SFTP connections are still possible from the client to server ; It's really RSYNC/SSH  that doesn't work anymore.

I have lots of RSYNC backup jobs on both my 6.4.1. systems, and they all still function correctly.  The source is my pro-6 (so they "pull" data to the OS 6 systems).

None use RSYNC/SSH - which might be a clue.

Re: Backing up via rsync ssh failing since upgrade to 6.4.1

Well, I did again some tests, confirming the issue:

1. RN102 - running 6.4.0 - Start a manual backup - Log shows:

Backup Job Name: Art-Scène Backup
Backup Job Type: Incremental

Backup Destination: [remote:rsync+ssh]/my-server.blabla.be://Online-backup

Backup Finish Time: Sun Dec 13 2015 9:25:30
Backup Status: Success

sending incremental file list

(note: this log entry is normal, because of "CHROOT JAIL" settings on the server that restrict the client to its home directory)

total size is 127,790,432,951 speedup is 54,137.57

2. Same RN102 - Upgraded to 6.4.1 - Start the same manual backup - Log shows:

Backup Job Name: Art-Scène Backup

3. Same RN102 - Downgrade to 6.4.0 - Start the same manual backup - Log shows:

Re: Backing up via rsync ssh failing since upgrade to 6.4.1

I finally have done the following:

On my Readynas backup server:

  • move the backup files to a temporary location
  • Delete the backup account
  • Recreate the backup account

On my Readynas client:

  • Delete the backup job
  • Recreate the backup job, with a source that contains almost no files, then run it (when you run a backup job for the first time, it will copy all files (i.e. full backup) to backup server, which I wanted to avoid. That's why I have set the source to an almost empty location)

On my Readynas backup server:

  • Move back the backup data from temporary location to the backup location

On my Readynas client:

  • Modify the backup job, and set the source to my real backup source location, then run it again (as it did ran once already, it will now do an incremental backup as wanted. Because I restored the real backup on the backup server, and there were no changes on the client, the backup job runs rather quickly... and all is working fine again.

Pffff !

Re: Backing up via rsync ssh failing since upgrade to 6.4.1

Hi,

the procedure described by jheye1 doesn't work for me.

My server uses rsync version 3.0.9 and my

readynas uses since 6.4.1 rsync version 3.1.1

I seems that the readynas sends unknown options to my server.

Is it possible to downgrade to 6.4.0?

Thanks

Markus

Hi,

has anybody tried the 6.4.2 Beta?
