USB HDD problems - linked to recent FW6.4.0 upgrade?

USB HDD problems - linked to recent FW6.4.0 upgrade?

I have a RN102 - 2x 2TB discs.

In the past few days I have had trouble with my backups to sever USB hdds - several as I swap them trying to resolve the issue.

I am not at the point where the RN102 usually will not boot right when a USB hdd is attached, and if I do get it up, backup jobs (RSYNC) fail witrh timeout errors.

I am seeing lost of things in dmesg that indicate a USB problem, but I am not an expert to know exactly what:

So, what might my problem be:

a. Something up with FW6.4.0?

b. I own lots of faulty USB hdds (I am checking them with Seatools to be sure)?

c. The RN102 is faulty?

d. Something else?

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: USB HDD problems - linked to recent FW6.4.0 upgrade?

Hi,

Just reporting back, so as to complete this thread...

I have updated my RN102 to v6.4.1, and retested the portable USB drive that was troublesome with v6.4.0. It looks like, whatever the problem was, it has been resolved and I have successfully completed a full backup (via RSYNC) to this drive.

Re: USB HDD problems - linked to recent FW6.4.0 upgrade?

Hi BrianL

Thankyou for taking the time to reply.

I am aware of the USB drive name change issue... until I had this possible hardware issue, I was up to USB_HDD_4 with the same drive. I had been incrementing my rsync back up job each time 🙂

I have done more testing. I have now attached a desktop USB HDD, with its own power supply, and It has been recognised and mounted immediately. The previous 2 USB HDDs were of the portable type, power from the RN102.

I am re-running my backup job as I type this... well, it has been running all night so far and still has a lot to do.

So, has something changed that would affect my RN102's ability to power USB ports? I have identical drives on 3 RN Duo's, now for 12mths +, and the RN102 has had one since I bought it 7 months ago.

Kind regards,

Ian

Re: USB HDD problems - linked to recent FW6.4.0 upgrade?

Ok. An update.

Using a desktop USB HDD (with own PSU), my backup has completed without a hitch... no errors, no admin page unresponsiveness. It just worked.

So, it looks like the bus powering of my previous portable USB HDDs is the issue...

I just have no idea why the RN102 suddenly became unable to power my portable USB HDD after 7 months, and after upgrading to OS6.4.0 (coincidence?)

Any advice appreciated.

Ian

Re: USB HDD problems - linked to recent FW6.4.0 upgrade?

Hi ilneill,

Do you mean that the unit will be stable and the RSYNC backup will run just fine if the USB attached has its own PSU? And if its a portable one, the issue persists?

Re: USB HDD problems - linked to recent FW6.4.0 upgrade?

Hi BrianL

Yes it does seem to be the case. I have no access troubles and my RSYNC backups work if I use a USB HDD that has its own power supply. If I use either of the portable bus powered USB HDDs that I happen to have then I have trouble with the RN102 recognising them, with the RN102 seeming to get "stuck" and becoming unresponsive until I disconnect them. If it does manage to recognise the drive, the backups fail at some point with timeout errors.

One of the USB HDDs was attached to the RN102 for 7 months, and the other was until recently attached to a RN Duo (until I upgraded to a larger one).

This does seem to be related to the bus powering of the USB HDDs, but I accept that my testing is hardly exaustive. Additionally, I am only linking my issue to the OS6.4.0 software simply because upgrading to that was the last thing I changed in my otherwise stable setup.

I will contact support as you have suggested.

King regards,

Ian

Re: USB HDD problems - linked to recent FW6.4.0 upgrade?

A brief update.

My RN102 has been absolutely fine for 10days+ running with my externally powered USB HDD. All backups (RSYNC) successful and no Admin GUI access issues either.

I have raised a support ticket, initially enquiring about this being a hardware issue. Support has been very responsive. Seems they do not seem to think this is a hardware issue, but more of a OS v6.4.0 issue...

"Currently our engineers are looking for a possible issue from 6.4.0 with USB devices unable to be detected or causing the NAS to hang. ... new beta firmware is now in testing phase and will released soon."

Fingers crossed!

Hi illneill,

Thanks for updating the thread. By the way, have you tried installing the latest Beta release?
