How can i quickly delete files on my NVX

i have a NVX that has some back-ups that are a few 100 gbs in size.

these backups are made up of 1000's of little files.

i need to delete them, and i have manually been assigning them the delete command.

they are taking days to delete....WAAAYY too long.

is there are a way for someone who isn't a total computer geek to get into the NAS and get these files gone quicker?

mdgm, you are indeed the most valuable resource for mac users that use netgear redynas products..

your advice for both using frontview to delete general backup files

and using cifs/smb to delete sparsbundles (setting up the TMtemp folder to use as the target folder to delete from)

is brilliant.

what gets me is why hasn't netgear published this themselves..

you have no idea of how many days i've spent often in vain, waiting for material to delete using the 

normal way through a finder window..

generally to the point of despising the machine i have..

anyway, so many thanks mdgm for your assistance in these hurdles that i faced..

Are these backups the only files on the share?

no i wish it ws the only data on the share..

this file is the biggest one on the share, but theres lots of other backups 

there we need to keep..:-(

Is each backup in its own folder?  If so, the web interface might be faster.

the one big folder i need to get rid of has a few hundred subfolders..

when i have chosen one of the large subfolders to delelte in it's entirety,

it can sit there "deleteng" for days, maybe end up saying that it can't    

because one of it's content "is in use", which in fact isn't the case

at all becasue that material all relates to an application that isn't running.

if i was deleteing these off the mac, it'd take maybe take 15 minutes...

assuming there is a better way,

can you advise how to use the web interface to delete files?

i'm not a comfortable NAS geek, so it sort of needs to be

"fool proof" 😉

You enable https for the share.  Then access as https://nasname/sharename.

You click the checkbox next to the folder/files you want to delete, then scroll to the top and click on the delete button.

Hi ash1,

Kindly follow these steps:

1. Access the Frontview page

2. Click the Shares tab and select Share Listing

3. There is an HTTP/S icon on each share. Click on the icon that is aligned on the share that you want to configure.

4. Change the default access to Read/Write 

5. Hit the apply button tat the bottom.

Note: Ensure that HTTPS protocol is enabled under Services -> Standard File Protocols

thanks again, that worked well with files that are in the shres listing..

now the next issue is that it looks like i have to delete the TimeMachine sparsebundle that relates to the machine

that i have been working (moving around backups) with.

it's misbehaving, saying it's run out of room, but it's not automatically deleting old TimeMachine backups like it should.

plus i think it does have room.

saying that i don't mind dleteing it and strting fresh.

again, i've tried to do this from the mac finder, which has worked in the past, but

it says it can't as something "is in use"...:(

i can't seem to find in FrontView anywhere where i can go in and do this?

can you help me get in and do this?

The alternative to AFP.

Would be to login to SMB as the "admin" (no quotes) user and look under the hidden ".timemachine" folder on the C share.

Or if you are comfortable with root SSH and the implications of using that you could use that.

i am unaware of what both SMB and the root SSH mean and what their methods are, but the root SSH sounds dangerous..

i'm  guessing thats got something to do with terminal?

so the SMB sounds like it's worth looking into.

can you please give instructions on how to get there?

do i have a C share on my mac?

saying that, i just looked around and maybe your SMB is the same as the CIFS that i can see in the finder?

i have logged into CIFS as admin and casn see the C share.

what i can't find is the hidden timemachine that you mentioned?

am i close to what you are suggesting?

pardon, but i navigated to the hidden timemachine via the go menu..

after iu figured out what you meant.

i have asked to trash the sparsbundle in question.

the deleting window looks the same as the AFP one, but i will let it run..

the bundle is about 940GB, so im not sure how to estimate the delete time..

i just hope it actually does it.

i'll report back with the reults..
