Can the Orbi Modem CBK40 be combined with an existing Orbi router system?

I currently have the Orbi RBK20W router + 1 plug in satellite combo. I want to get rid of my cable provider’s rental modem. Can the Orbi CBK40 built in cable modem/router + satellite combo be combined with my existing system and become a single mesh network? I wouldn’t mind placing my current units to other areas of my home where signal is spotty.

  • The satellites would all work but you don't want to run 2 orbi routers on the same network. Potentially you can but one of the routers would need to be in AP mode and use a different ssid. it tends to add interference, create issues, and kind of ruins the point of using orbi by having the single ssid feature and seamless roaming.

What I'd do if you've already got an orbi setup? I'd just get a modem that's compatible with your isp. The cm1000, cm1100, cm1200 all work great and potentially are compatible if the CBK40 is. Plus they're all docsis 3.1 compable. When you go with modem/router combo devices, the ISP controls the firmware. And it doesn't get updated as much as it should.

You can purchase satellites as needed to add to the configuration if you need more coverage.

  • The CBR40 can only work in modem gateway router mode or modem only mode. So if you plan on replaceing the ISP modem with the CBK40, then you could connect it and it's RBS and the RBS from the RBR20s system to the CBK40. The RBR20 would not be used nor can it work as a RBS. Orbi RBRs only support router or AP mode. No RBS mode. Or configure the CBR40 for modem mode only then connect your current RBR20 system to the CBR40 along with connecting the CBK40s RBS to the RBR20 system.
