I rewired the router as suggested, modem to router, router to switch, but that cut my PC off the WWW and still didn't allow the router to access the internet from the Orbi app in setup mode. Returned the wiring and regained www on the PC. Rebooting entire system also did not work.

Is this PC wired to the router? Or wifi'd?
There has been a lot of "messing around" here. You can't just pull out plugs here and there and plug them back in where you think fit.
You started off with a wonky network that had little chance of working as expected. You now need to set up the network as it should be.
First establish that your modem is working as it should.
Then restart the network. Be sure to restart your network in this sequence:
- Turn off and unplug modem.
- Turn off router and computers.
- Plug in and turn on modem. Wait 2 minutes for it to connect.
- Turn on the router and wait 2 minutes for it connect.
- Turn on computers and rest of network.
You may need to factory reset the router yet again before you do this, to get it to forget any settings it picked up .

This is a lot like the instructions that FURRYe38 offered. The important bit is to do things in the correct order. No shortcuts.
FURRYe38 did ask "What is the mfr and model# of this switch."
It could be important.
