Can't Port Forward or Host Game Servers with Orbi
Hi, i've been searching around online for quite a while now and se a lot of people have had problems with port forwarding on orbi systems. But i haven't seen an article or forum post like with mine. ...
- Sep 28, 2019A Netgear engineer replied to my inquiry about this issue with the following:
————————————————
As per our router specification "An implementation MUST NOT send out the ICMPv6 echo reply on the router’s WAN interface if the “Respond to Ping on Internet Port” option is not enabled” for security reasons. So that means in order to allow this user must enable respond to ping on internet port. R7800 should have an option for IPv6 ping on the debug page. If you go to debug page you should see an option called “Allow external IPv6 hosts ping internal IPv6 hosts” and user need to enable this if he wants external IPv6 address to ping internal ones."
To access the debug page, just type this address on your browser 192.168.1.1/debug.htm or routerlogin.net/debug.htm and login using the router's credentials. Scroll down to the bottom and look for Allow external IPv6 hosts ping internal IPv6 hosts and enable it.
——————————————-
Should I try this or is this a security concern? Not sure what to make of this. Thanks

When you have the Orbi connected to the ISP router, find out what IP the Orbi router is getting from the ISP router, look at the ISP routers connected clients list and see if the Orbi shows up there. If it does, input this iP address into the ISP routers DMZ. Also set up an IP address reservation for this IP address ON the ISP router.
No.

How would i set up a reserved IP?
Sorry for the late response, i was doing stuff with the family.
- FURRYe38Dec 27, 2018Guru - Experienced User
You'll need to look up information about your ISP router and how to reserve IP addresses. There should be a PDF or something about how to reserve IP addresess. Might contact your ISP as well. They will know and be able to help you.

would the IP of my Orbi be the RBR50 in my Primary Network's connections for my ISP Router?
- FURRYe38Dec 27, 2018Guru - Experienced User
No. The LAN side IP address of the Orbi will be 192.168.1.1, The IP address of the ISP router will be different. Check the ISP routers connected clients list for the IP address the Orbi is getting from the ISP modem.
I would contact your ISP for help and information regarding this...

Thank you for all the fast support and the manual! You are truly a godsend!

Hope this helps. Let us know if you get it all working. You have the options.
Good Luck.

I've looked around the manual and searched online, but i cant find anything for reserving IP addresses
Would this be the IP I put in the DMZ. Because i did and my friend still couldn't join my server. - FURRYe38Dec 27, 2018Guru - Experienced User
Is that the IP address your Orbi router is getting from the ISP modem?
Whats the LAN IP address you get from the Orbi router with a PC connected to the Orbi router? IT should be a 192.168.0.### and not a 1.###. Unless you have changed the Orbi routers 192.168.1.1 to something different.
I recommend trying AP mode again on the Orbi router.
- Augustus_377Dec 27, 2018Guide
I'll mess around and see if I can set up AP, can't do it right now because it's 2AM. Thanks again for all the help!

Just follow the AP setup links posted in this thread. Should easy to do and will work.
You'll not use DMZ on the ISP modem for the Orbi in AP mode. You can still set a IP address reservation for it though which is recommended.
After setting AP mode, I would reboot both the ISP router and Orbi router and the configuration wired PC. Once the system is back online, the PC should be getting an IP address thru the Orbi in AP mode from the ISP router.

Sorry if this is tedious but could you give me a step by step of what to do to set up the AP and all directions. I want to do it ask quickly as possible so my parents to get pissed at me. They are extermely stubborn when it comes to tech stuff.

Review and follow this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7LOcJ8GdDo&app=desktop
I would disconnect the Router from the ISP modem first. Wire connect a PC to the Orbi router and follow the instructional video. Onc you have selected the AP mode and selected Apply, the router should reboot. When this happens, connect the cable from the ISP modem back to the WAN port of the Orbi router. You should have Internet again thru the Orbi and to your wired PC. Test the wired PC first, then wireless devices.

What happens if i dont disconnect the Router from my ISP Router first?
- FURRYe38Dec 29, 2018Guru - Experienced User
Possible IP address conflict. Disconnecting the router from the ISP Modem first, releases the IP address. Then after you set and configure AP mode on the Orbi router and let it reboot, then connect the cable to the WAN port while its booting, should ensure the Orbi gets a new IP address from the ISP modem/router.

I enabled AP mode but my friend still cant see my game!
- Augustus_377Dec 29, 2018Guide
In relation to my other reply, he cant connect either when he sees it. I did the unplug thing and turned on AP mode. I then took my laptop upstairs and plugged the ethernet into my extender Orbi for a faster connection than wifi. But he still can't connect!

FIrst off, do you get internet thru the AP mode system?
You'll need to configure the ISP modem for any port useage and forwarding configurations since the ISP modem is still the main host router for your gaming needs. Contact the ISP or Mfr of the modem for help and informatoin on this. The Orbi in AP mode is now just strickly data pass-through only. No routing abilities. This is all being handled by the ISP Modem/router now.

Im connected to my Orbi wifi via AP mode
- Augustus_377Dec 29, 2018Guide
I dont want to sound rude in any way because of the fast support from you, but I'll be sitting here waiting beause I have nothing better to do besides wait for help. I need this to be set up as soon as possible because if my mom finds me wang-jangling the internet, im toast.
- FURRYe38Dec 29, 2018Guru - Experienced User
I would get on the phone with the ISP support. ISP Modem routers vary with options and fetures. I don't use or have this particular modem so I don't have the experience to help you with it. ISP Tech services will be able to help you configure it though.Do a search on the web for your model modem and game port configurations. See if anything pops up for you.
The Orbi doesn't need to be configured any more. Just need to get gaming port configurations set up on the ISP modem now is all.
- Augustus_377Dec 29, 2018Guide
I was able to host servers perfectly fine before on my ISP's WiFi, am I forgetting some setting? Do I need to enable something else?
- FURRYe38Dec 30, 2018Guru - Experienced User
No. Nothing else needs to be done on the Orbi. Its all in data traffice pass thru mode. Try connecting to the Orbi base unit and not the satellite. Turn that off for now. See if you can get connected. If the wireless is disabled ON the ISP modem and your just using the Orbi base in AP mode, this should work well.
You might reboot the ISP modem, Orbi base and your PC.
Ensure your seeing an IP address on your PC from the modem router.

I'll try this. If i get it working you can expect a large influx of Kudos coming your way.

Just checking on this...any progress?
- Augustus_377Jan 01, 2019Guide
Nope.
Frontier makes you pay to even ask them if bridge mode is possible. And that is not an option for me. Ugh, why does NETGEAR have to be so complicated. We got extenders when we first moved here and they just stopped working. Now this, it's just dissapointing.

IF the Orbi in in AP mode, configuration of the ISP Modem and router for gaming and such is all thats needed. Would not have to do anything with the Orbi.
