CAT5 for Orbi and phone

I am using a CAT5 that is currently providing phone via a cable modem and want to split the CAT5 so that it has 2 wires going to the phone and the remaining 6 wires to the RJ45 connector for the Orbi.  Can I do this or do I need all 8 wires for the Orbi?  Thanks.

  • That is a really bad idea.  You will get crosstalk interference from the phone line onto the data lines.  Also, you should use CAT5e or CAT6 network cables to have 1Gb/s speed as CAT5 is only rated for 100Mb/s speed.
