Devices attached to satellites unable to talk to each other

Thanks for the quick response and all the suggestions. I'll give them a try and report back, but in the meantime here are the answers to your questions:

Wireless
> What is the size of your home? Sq Ft?
~5000 sq ft
> What is the distance between the router and satellite(s)?
I don't have exact measurements, but a rough guess is about 30ft.
> What channels are you using? Auto? Try setting manual channel 1, 6 or 11 on 2.4Ghz and any unused channel on 5Ghz.
I initially saw the problem with 2.4GHz set to Auto, but I've since reconfigured to channel 4. I'll try 1, 6, or 11 next.

No, not really. I see a very faint signal from one neighbor, but not enough to really connect to.

Yeah, I know. I just mentioned that as a point to prove that there's at least one network pathway from laptop -> RBR -> RBS -> server. Going via the server's local IP doesn't work, but going via the external IP with port forwarding the Orbi routes the data just fine.

Why not put the Server connected at the RBR iinstead of the RBS?
Factory resets have proven to help fix odd issues seen after FW updates.

I can't relocate the server itself, so I'd need to run Ethernet across the house...possible, but part of the reason I bought this system was in hopes of avoiding that. And besides...if I connected the server to the RBR then I'd just reverse the problem and have issues when my laptop is connected to the RBS instead (which is less frequent, but still a fundamental problem).

It's been a week since I last posted on this thread. Actually when I was in the middle of typing that last reply the issue cropped up again and my RBS started having connectivity issues. I didn't have time to start any troubleshooting steps at the time and just rebooted it, but it failed to get an IP from the RBR on boot (indicated with a solid magenta light). I tried re-syncing it without any luck at first, but then I powered all three units down (RBR and two RBSes) then powered the RBR on and confirmed a good connection. Then I powered on the problematic RBS and re-synced it, at which point it connected fine. The other RBS powered on fine and connected with no issue.
Since then I haven't seen any problems, but I'll of course continue to keep an eye on it. Fingers crossed that it's cleared up for good :)
