Devices can't perform software updates with Orbi Wifi

I have an RBR40. 

My cable company says they have a passthrough modem but the Orbi creates a conlflict with the ip address and devices that I have connected (Roku, xbox) won't perform system updates.  Thye say the Orbi has to provide a narrow ip address range but there are not peopel that work at Netgear to answer questions.

    what actual modem do you have? (model)

    What firmware is on the router? 

    You said the modem is in passthrough mode? it wouldn't be the first time an ISP supplied device didn't function properly in passthrough mode. 

    Have you tried putting the Orbi's IP address into the combo device DMZ?
    or the Orbi in access point mode?
