Factory reset are still valid and though not required, still a necessary troubleshooting step. There is a reason why the reset button AND Erase button in the UI is there. Perfedtly reasonable to do resets only when needed. Some cases are needed. It's solved many user mis-configurations.
Good Luck.

Absolutely no issues here at all. Updated, installed and re-booted with no dramas and all attached devices are fine. Speeds are the same as before updating.
Your troubles should not put others off updating as I am sure there are many who will have a positive experience!!!

I think many issues are a result of activating some of the advanced features(Armor, Disney Circle, etc) and/or a combination of advanced configuration that takes you further from the default. I've seen this happen with other Router Vendors like ASUS and have always tried to minimize the amount of changes made from the default configuration. I'm not saying this is acceptable. You should be able to configue the device the way you want as long as its supported. I also see people separating the 2.4ghz SSID from the 5ghz and I wonder if this causes issues as well.

Been many issues reported with the security apps, seems to be mixed bag of working or not working. OF course, any app you enabled just adds to more porcessing of data.
Separation of SSIDs isn't supported so seen users posts of seeing problems after they separate SSIDs. Setting back to single or factory reest and setup from scratch resolves this. - intellerJul 14, 2019Apprentice
havent activated Circle or Armor, cause that junk has been broken from the get go and NETGEAR refuses to fix it. Simply put, it is beyond reasonable expectation to have someone completely reset their modem to apply a firmware update in this day and age.

So what is the most recommended stable working firmware for the RBK50 & RBS50? Planning on buying the router + 2 satellites from Costco soon and wanted to make sure that everything works okay without any hiccups. Thanks!

2.3.1.60 is solid

v2.3.5.30 is stable. Runing in AP mode currently. Zero issues.
Make sure you update your new system to v2.0.0.74 first, then graduate to the latest. You have to update the RBS first, then RBR.

I'm having major isues with this firmware.
Wi-fi on Apple devices keeps failing. They appear connected, but don't work.
(At the same time non-apple devices continue working without issue)

Looks like your problem is actually with Apple devices, not Netgear. Apple used non-standard software in their networking devices which led many incompatibilities with non-Apple devices. Some time ago they got out of the networking business.
I have RBK 53 running in router mode with this particular firmware with absolutely no issues.

"Looks like your problem is actually with Apple devices"
I've had multiple wifi devices (Apple and non-Apple) working fine for over a year with Orbi.
It was immediately following this Orbi update that I started getting Apple device issues.
I have now downgraded the firmware, and all is back to working fine, so it's defo the Netgear firmware

Been many others NOT having any issues with Apple devices. Including me as well. I have a few, both older and newer. Seen many issues on Orbi. Mostly resolved by a factory reset and setup from scratch after a FW update. Lucky ones are the ones who don't have to reset. Probably systems that are not mis-configured by users to begin with. Enjoy.

I singled that out so you could read that by itself and see how ridiculous it sounds. It is 2019 and luck should have zero to do with updating your network firmware from one release to the next. Stop being a netgear apologist for their shoddy development and release practices! - FURRYe38Jul 24, 2019Guru - Experienced User
Sure thing man. Have nice day.

I am running in Router mode .. I did some tweeking today and the system is more stable .. Messed the Qos .. Reality is the Firware is the issue here they need to fix it .. There sould be no reason for the wan to keep droopping on a point to point setup where no other systems are infront of the router ..

Did you do a 'manual' update?
- intellerSep 24, 2019Apprentice
it doesn't matter if you do a manual or automatic update. Months later and still no fix for this disaster of a firmware update.

Perhaps...but IF you allowed the system to do a auto update and then your network crashed, you might feel better knowing you had nothing to do with it.
