Hard drive options for media player

Hi guys, had an orbi mesh router and 1 satelite for a while now but recently bought an apple tv 4k for streaming and watching stored media in the living room.

Just a quick question about my options and costs.

I'm wanting to watch my films etc from my external hard drive on the apple tv but understand the orbi system is incapable of attaching a hard drive to the printer port unless this has changed?

I have just the orbi acting as a router attached to my modem atm so i can't add the hard drive to a capable router unless i buy a router that will do this job.

Has anyone got a suggestion for my best option i'm trying to keep costs down.
