My general practice is to do the following:

• Set aside a range of IP addresses for devices that you want to always have the same IP address and then enter the MAC addresses of those devices into the LAN Setup table.
• Define another range of IP addresses for devices that are more transient: guests, gizmos you may try out and decide, "nah", Apple devices that keep changing their MAC address every time their software updates, etc.

Currently I have 192.168.1.70 set aside for my  'permanent' devices (desktops, printers, thermostat, security cameras, etc.) and 71-100 for "stuff".  I have changed this several times over the years.
