Modem Combo Units:
This would be a double NAT condition which isn't recommended. https://kb.netgear.com/30186/What-is-Double-NAT
Couple of options,
1. Configure the modem for transparent bridge or modem only mode. Then use the Orbi router in router mode. You'll need to contact the ISP for help and information in regards to the modem being bridged correctly.
2. If you can't bridge the modem, disable ALL wifi radios on the modem, configure the modems DMZ/ExposedHost or IP Pass-Through for the IP address the Orbi router gets from the modem. Then you can use the Orbi router in Router mode.
I would try Option #2...

However, I can't get any connectivity to the internet, as an example if I try to ping anything it times out. I have found in this situation if I go to the Orbi managment page and just run a Test connectivity from the internet tab once it gets about halfway through my internet connectivity comes back up. Otherwise I have to wait several minutes for this to resolve itself. I have updated to the latest Firmware on the Orbi. And yes I know I can put it in AP Mode, but then I lose some of the router functions I bought the Orbi for, specifcally Circle.
Lastly as far as I can tell the NVG589 is setup correctly. When I first set the Orbi up as a router I had issues with double NAT'ing, but was able to solve that by changing the settings on the Uverse box. I had a previous Linksys router so I just needed to update the Uverse box with the Orbi MAC address, directions here http://www.dslreports.com/faq/17734. Everything after that cleared up, except for this loss of connectivty, anyone else experience this and solve it?
