My limited experience with Powerline is that it can indeed work beautifully, or it can be unreliable and frustrating.
When two devices are on the same electrical circuit, Powerline can be awesome. Once the signal passes through the electrical panel through two circuit breakers, performance can drop significantly. Currently, I have a Tivo video recorder and Tivo Mini remote networked to each other and the internet through three Powerline adapters. Tried a fourth adapter in the garage to network some security cameras and it would work for a random period of time and then "turn red". The process of getting that adapter working again involved crawling under furniture and going up/down stairs and I got fed up with it. Installed an Orbi satellite in the garage instead.
Many homes have coaxial cable running throughout the house from when it was common to include connections for cable television in most rooms of a house. Multi media over Coax (MoCA) adapters can provide excellent data networking. I used MoCA for several years and it was rock solid. Did not like the rat's nest of coax behind the Orbi router and went to Powerline.

Sums up my experience. Works well for when you want to connect a TV to a "local" router without the pain of using wifi. Also good at providing wired backhaul for an AP on the same circuit. Hopeless at jumping a fuse box.
