My Orbi OpenVPN works with Windows, Android, and Linux (non-Windows). So, the task is to figure out what's wrong.
First, two things:
- You need to know the WAN side IP address of the Orbi.
It should NOT be a "private" IP address (i.e. it should not begin with 192.168, with 10.0, or with 172.168) - What kind of smartphone are you using (Android or Apple?)
OpenVPN relies on accepting a connection from the internet. If the Orbi is "behind" another router, this cannot happen. What is the Brand & model of modem the Orbi is connected to? If the Orbi WAN IP address is a private IP, then you are behind another router. Another way to determine if the Orbi is connected to another router is to do a "trace route" to some well-known IP address, such as Google DNS (8.8.8.8).
On Windows, open a DOS window and enter tracert 8.8.8.8
On a smartphone, you need an "app" that will perform trace route. On mny Android, I use Network Tools by HE.NET (It's free.)
If the first entry is not the local IP address of the Orbi or the second entry is not a public IP address, you are behind another router and OpenVPN will not work.
Does the DDNS "work"? Open a web browser and search for "nslookup". There are dozens of web sites that perform this function. Enter the DDNS name of the Orbi. Does it return the public IP address of the Orbi?
What error is logged by the OpenVPN client?

Hi CrimOn,
The WAN IP is not a "private ip" it begins with 99.246.
The brand and model is Hitron CODA.
I am using an iPhone but i tried with windows and mac as well.
The ddns does return the correct WAN IP of the modem.
Thank you for your help! I am desperately trying to find a solution lol.

Sorry I made a mistake in my last reply. The WAN IP of the Orbi router does begin with 192.168 i gave you the beginning of the WAN IP of the modem I am using. So the ddns I am using is giving me the external ip of the modem I have. Is it still possible to remote into my home network?
OpenVPN can work if the Hitron can be put into "bridge" or "passthrough" mode. There appear to be several models of Hitron CODA. I think you have two choices:
- Call up the ISP and tell them, "Please put my Hitron xxxx into bridge mode. I want it to be only a modem. no router. no WiFi."
- Find the Hitron user manual and learn how to log into the Hitron and make the changes yourself.
Being a dedicated computer geek, I would pick option #2 and spend hours searching and trying.
Honestly, I do not know what this will do to the DDNS. I would be prepared to set it up again or "refresh" it if things do not go smoothly.
- You need to know the WAN side IP address of the Orbi.
