You are not alone. Netgear's process for firmware updates is a mystery to many of us. In my view, there appears to be a tangled process involving device serial numbers, physical location (US, international, EU, etc.) and time. There are several posts every week describing this exact situation.
In my own case, I decided to "wait it out" when V2.7.4.24 became available. As I recall, I eventually started getting notices that it was available. Then, at least six weeks later, one morning my RBR50 had automatically updated to the new version without my doing anything. About that time there was the horrible debacle when Netgear forced an automatic update on the 750/850 series products and locked users out of administrating them. From what I hear, the automatic update process was put on hold. (Maybe the notification process was affected as well?)
My position remains the same. "If it ain't broke, why fix it?" If the WiFi system is performing as expected and there appear to be no problems, there is no great urgency in updating firmware. When a new firmware release has been out for 5-6 weeks and there are not many complaints on the forum, I consider updating. The situation is entirely different if there are performance issues.

Dropped in to say I’ve seen emails from Netgear too as notice a new firmware update is recommended citing security fixes. In general I’m okay with this, but I’ve seen reported issues picked up by the CM with no additional follow up. So I’m sitting on the decision to apply the update and may never do it manually at this point unless more confidence is provided in this forum.
