New PIXMA iP8720 can't connect to Router R6400
I just purchased a Canon PIXMA iP8720 printer. Setting up WiFi is a nightmare. Canon support says it's a router issue because it needs to be set to 2.4 GHz. I have set it for this option on my androi...

Very strange. The R6400 user manual says WPS works the same way as Cannon says it should.

I seem to recall reading that another way to set up the printer is to temporariliy connect it to the computer with a USB cable, use the Cannon software to configure the printer to use WiFi and then unplug the USB cable. The R6400 instructions talk about the software being on a CD, but I am certain it will be available on the internet as well.

Thank you, but I've been through all of these steps numberous times on my own, and then again with Canon tech support on chat. I had a retired IT person come over and give it a shot and he couldn't get it connected either. This is what tech support said:
"This would mean that the router is operating on the 5 GHz frequency band (this printer can only connect to 2.4 GHz networks), or there are other security settings which are keeping the printer from connecting. At this point, you would have to use a direct USB cable connection with your Windows computer or contact your router provider to determine why the printer cannot find the network."
We were trying to connect with my phone because he said it would be easier. My phone was set to NETGEAR12-5g, but I switched it to just NETGEAR12 and they still don't find each other. Using a USB cable is not an option since the printer can't be close enough to the computer. I really want it connected via my compter, not my phone, anyway.

Thanks CrimpOn. This solution has done the trick. I conneceted via USB then printed a page. Then I opened a pic in my Android phone and sent it to print. It went through the whole finding the printer process, but this time it found the network and the printer and printed the pic. Then I unplugged from USB and sent another pic to print from my computer and it worked! I did have to have my phone WiFi connected to the 2.4 GHz option instead of 5—but I had already done that without success before trying the USB option first. Thanks a million for answering! It was more help than I got from Canon tech.
