In over four years, I have never seen Netgear announce a date when firmware will be released. (for any product)

Yeah, but it's been over 7 months since the last release. I'm not experiencing any issues but it's sort of hard to believe NG has not discovered any security vulnerabilities or otherwise fixed any outstanding issues.
And doesn't mean that there not working on something. Also Orbi AC, being the more matured product line, may not require as frequent FW updates as new Orbi AX so NG maybe prioritizing FW updates across Orbi product lines.
