So the iMac does get an IP config, and we can assume the physical networking, the ports are OK.

You might have configured Access Control in whatever way, e.g. as lined out in the Orbi User Manual, p.56, with "Allow all new devices to connect" or "Block all new devices from connecting." - so you might have to allow the device. Be aware that "device" can vary - for the router it's not the same if connected by WiFi or by Ethernet, due to the different MAC addresses.
