Orbi R50R wireless devices will only connect on protocol 802.11a
All my wireless devices will only connect to my Orbi R50R using protocol 802.11a and thus get very slow performance.

It would be helpful if you explain how this conclusion is reached. 802.11a operates only in the 5G frequency band and the vast majority of devices typically found around the home have only 2.4G radios.
