ORBI RBK20W

How can one update the firmware on the RBR20 and RBR 30 to the last firmware Orbi released. Following the directions is no help as trying to manually update, the .IMG format will not appear. I understand orbi is not supporting this router any more, but one should be able to update to the last firmware.  MAC OS 14.3.1

Thanks

  • The RBK20W package (a 'K' for "Kit" consists of one RBR20 router and one RBS30 satellite ('R' for router and 'S' for satellite)  The latest firmware release can be found here:

    https://www.netgear.com/support/product/rbk20w#download

When these two zip files are downloaded and unpacked:

    • The router file contains a *.img file with the firmware for the RBR20 router
    • The satellite file contains a *.chk file with the firmware for the RBS30 satellite.

(It appears that the firmware for this satellite was created by a different software engineering team or the product is based on a different hardware platform, so the file has a different extension.  *.chk is definitely correct.)

My practice is to connect directly to the web page of each unit to manually install firmware. i.e.

    • Find the IP address of the satellite and open a web browser to 'http' (that IP address)
Log in with the Orbi web admin credentials, "admin" and the password
Select the menu item, Firmware Update.
Navigate to the location where the *.chk file is and upload it.
    • Do the same thing with the RBR20 router, but navigate to the Advanced Tab, Administration menu, Firmware Update and select the Manual Update tab.  This page has two sections (router is above the line. satellites are below the line)
Locate the *.img file and follow the directions.

CrimpOn, thanks for the info, that seemed to work well. Had a little trouble with passwords, but after that all OK.

One item, when you go back and check for updates in the system, it seems not to recognize the new update and shows the old version number. Does the system take time to register the new update?

      Thanks
