Orbi RBR50 Admin Page is Unusably Slow, Won't Load, Hangs

I think the unit I have is defective, but I want to see if anybody else has this experience. I performed a factory reset on my Orbi RBR50 and I'm trying to go through the initial setup process. However, the admin page loaded via either http://orbilogin.com or http://192.168.1.1 is unusably slow. It initially takes the page 5 minutes to load and every time I click the next button it takes between 1 and ∞ minutes to respond at all. At this point the software on these devices seems so bad that I have 100% lost faith in this. I'm ready to go back to something I can at least get to the point of loading OpenWRT on.

Details:

  • I have a single RBR50 with no satellites
  • wifi network is functioning with default settings (strong signal)
  • light on top of the unit is white
  • I have the Orbi directly connected to my cable modem
  • When I eventually get to the internet connection screen it reports that I'm successfully connected.
  • I eventually gave up on the screen to set an admin password* because the next button seemed to do absolutely nothing
  • No errors or warnings in the web browser JavaScript console
  • Lots of verrrry slow load times for basic HTML/CSS/JS requests in the network console, but nothing failing with 4xx/5xx response codes.

* Additional gripe: mandatory security questions are idiotic, especially in this context.

This slow behavior is not what one would expect.  Might get out the paperclip again before tossing it away.

    * Those security questions come into play when a user enters the admin password incorrectly three times in a row, and is used to recover admin access.  If the user never enters a password incorrectly, they are indeed redundant.
