I found a different thread that described most of same issues and the solution was to downgrade to a previous stable fw version. However, i am not able to find relevant info on downloading previous FW and installation instruction for downgrading. The thread is here

Replacing Orbi firmware is tedious, but not too difficult - especially if one has a computer to wire to the Orbi.
Browse to https://netgear.com/support Enter the model number RBR50 and click on Downloads. There is a link to firmware 2.3.5.30. Download the zip files for both router and satellite. Unpack (unzip) the files to extract the .img files.
Then use the Orbi web interface, Advanced Tab, Administration, Firmware Update, and select the "Manal Update" tab.
Good Luck!

thanks, took a little to find a little pull down to get previous FW, and discovered that i had to connect from browser to manually install fw for the satellite. Installing it soon ish and will report results back. Thanks!

Not sure what was going on, but the device crashed 5-6 times during the rest of day. The latency issue was still present so it's probably not a FW issue. I re-upgraded back to 2.5.1.8 and so far crashed twice in a day, still twice too many than before though... maybe the device is dying. I'll try a reset to factory and re-setup with config file and see how it goes.

Update: There has been no additional crashes since, but the bugs mentioned remained as I am again on 2.5.1.8. The sporatic latencies remained. I feel that these are bugs introduced in this FW, so hopefully new FW will fix them and will be released soon.
