What this sounds like is the router feeds a switch and everything is connected to the switch (other devices, Orbi router, Orbi satellites).
The traditional way to configure an Orbi system is to connect the Orbi directly to the primary router and then connect the switch to the Orbi.
When configured as a router, Yes, the WAN and LAN ports have different IP addresses. That is because the Orbi router creates an independent IP subnet for everything that it will be assigning IP addresses to. In AP mode, all IP addresses are assigned by the primary router, so the Orbi router has only one IP address.
As long as your system is "working", the unusual wiring pattern should have no impact on service life.
