Remote Desktop = screen sharing = VNC (port 5900 to answer the next question)
The two macs I connect to are both Mac Minis although likely irrelevant.
Mac laptop moves around the house running VNC, conneting to the two Macs listed above, so can change where it is connected to

Thanks. Think I get it now:
Two Mac Mini's connected to the Orbi network, each hosting macOS Remote Desktop.
When connected to the router and to one of the satellites, the laptop can remote to both Mac Mini's.
When connected to the other satellite, the laptop cannot remote to either of the Mac Mini's. (or to one but not the other?)
When I use VNC, I always identify the VNC hosts by their IP address. How does Remote Desktop indicate which of the two Mini's is the target for a specific connection session?

- Laptop is unable to connect to either server when the one satellite is involved

- I connect via IP address. Each connection is separate, so when things are working i have two VNC sessions open on my laptop, 1 to each server. When it can't connect, well, i have zero sessions open! I need VNC as these two mac minis have no keyboard/mouse nor display

I, also, use VNC to connect to my headless Raspberry Pi's.
Do these PI's respond to ICMP (ping)? (or have any other server software running on them (web server? FTP server? etc.)

As it turns out (new info to me) lots of stuff dies when laptop connects to the "bad" satellite!
Ping from laptop to mac mini dies, but laptop ping to RBR works fine (as well as https for web admin of RBR)
Plex stops working on the laptop (one of the Mac Minis is a plex server, laptop has plex client)
But lots of other things connect to that Satellite and work just fine, like Next cameras, Sonos speakers, LifX bulbs, iPhones, etc.
And my laptop works fine to get to the web when connected to the "bad" satellite, like web browsing, etc.
I can enable more server services on the minis, but I'm thinking they will also not work correctly. Befuddling...
