ORBI used as Gateway Slower than 1GB Connection
Hello,
I'm having trouble getting the RBK50 to run at 1GBS via ethernet when setup using PPOE and VLAN201. When I test the speeds with ethernet to the centurylink ZyXEL C3000Z, I have no issues. Wh...

Did a full factory reset then re-synced with fibre ONT using PPPoE and VLAN
Max speedtest was 700Mbps with most speed tests mid 400's (over wired ethernet)
Went back to direct to modem (Huawei HG659b) and got mid 900's again
Something seems definitely off with the Orbi acting as a router and connecting to a 1Gbps fibre connection....

Seen some routers that don't do well with PPPoE as the connection protocol. This one always seems to operate slower then Dynamic DHCP.
You might ask NG if this is an issue when using PPPoE and being on a 1Gb service.

I know others have tested there systems to 900Mb however I believe they were not using PPPoE.

Just did full resets again, and bridged my ISP modem with the Orbi acting as a router.
Again, an instant drop from 920Mbps to 680Mbps max speed (wired)
It'd be great to work the NG support to try and get to the bottom of this. But at present it appears that the Orbi can't do 1Gbps (i.e. mid 900Mbps) PPPoE which is a bit of a disappointment...

I would open up a ticket here and see if you can get some help on this:

Seems like PPPoE is having issues on Orbi. Others using DHCP for there ISP services are getting 900Mb speeds:

- alstsmithFeb 14, 2019ApprenticeI’d love to contact support directly. However it seems like this isn’t an option as I purchased the Orbi last September. I only got fibre in the last 3 weeks so this problem wasn’t apparent originally
Chat and email support aren’t available it seems as more than 90 days from purchase??
It’d be great if one of the moderators here could reach out as this does seem to be a real issue. - FURRYe38Feb 14, 2019Guru - Experienced User
Lets see if we can get someone to contact you.

I am also having a similar issue. NG support can you contact me please? Thanks.

Please open up a support ticket here and someone from NG will contact you then:

- alstsmithFeb 16, 2019ApprenticeWould love to. But apparently support is 90 days only (which seems extremely short)
- alstsmithFeb 16, 2019ApprenticeDM’d them both. Neither replying

I also would love to. But apparently support is 90 days only, and I am past that.

What is the MTT packet size, found on the WAN Settings page?
- alstsmithFeb 17, 2019Apprentice
MRU in Hg659b is 1492 with an MTT of 0
The orbi defaulted to 1492 when I had it in router mode.

Was this ever resolved?
- alstsmithFeb 19, 2019Apprentice
Not yet. Waiting to talk to NG support.
- manikinrunnerFeb 19, 2019Aspirant
Wow. Ok, thanks! I just bought the set from Costco and figured it would be better than my CL gateway (and the tech mentioned "it's easy to put a high-throughput router here instead, just connect to the ONT")
- alstsmithFeb 19, 2019Apprentice
It definitely works well like that in router mode. I'm just hitting a 30% performance hit on download speeds with 1Gbps fibre.
Hopefully it's a fixable firmware issue and not a hardware limitation.

Blanca_O send you a PM. Hopefully NG can have a look at your debug logs...Let us know how it goes.

I have 1Gps, too (what gives with 100 or 1000 and no inbetween?!) . . . looking forward to seeing what you find out.

What FW is currently loaded?
What is the Mfr and model# of the ISP modem the NG router is connected too?
Is the Orbi system operating in Router or AP mode?
What is the Mfr and model# of the ethernet switch if one is in the configuration. How are you testing your system?

Ah. I was referring to CenturyLink only offering fiber in two speeds: 100 or 1000. No in-between. Which is pretty dumb.

Ah, I guess thats how they keep there market and support mimimal. Does seem kind of odd. My ISP supports 1Gb and a few lower ones. I guess not alot of call for 500 or 700mb connections. :smileytongue:

- BubbaDougFeb 21, 2019TutorI too have gigabit Internet, but without PPPoE. My Orbi couldn’t keep up in Router mode so I switched to AP mode and brought in an R7800 as my router. Now I can sustain 942 megabits per second.
NAT is compute intensive and many routers, including the Orbi, don’t have the horsepower to keep up with a gigabit WAN.
