Outbound VPN with Orbi RBR40

Hello.

I have the Netgear Orbi RBK43S mesh wifi system running in my house.  It contains the RBR40 and two satellites.  The system completely solved all of my wifi issues and has been a stable addition to my network.

One issue, and I know it's been discussed a lot on various forums, is that outbound VPN is not supported.  Ideally, I want to use something like ExpressVPN or NordVPN to protect my network at the router level vs at the client level since most of these services have limits on the number of clients that can be connected simultaneously.  I have 50+ devices running on my network and at any one time I would estimate that 25% of them are actively connecting to the network, so that far exceeds the 5-6 active VPN connections that most services limit a subscriber to.

ExpressVPN tells me that because Orbi supports OpenVPN, in theory their service *should* work but they've not tested it with Orbi nor are they able to provide a guide on how to go about setting it up.  Has anyone here tried and been successful setting up a VPN service with Orbi systems?  Even if I had to add another router that supports outbound VPN in between my Orbi and my AT&T Fiber service modem, I could do that.  I'm assuming there would be some sort of service degradation with the extra router in the mix and that I'd likely have to switch the Orbi to AP-mode.

I'm just trying to see what options are available and if anyone can guide me to success.

Thanks!
