Ping spikes Orbi Satellite RBS50
In my household there are two of these RBS50v2 extenders. When connected via an ethernet cord to one of the boxes, there are no issues. When connected to the other box there are frequent ping spikes....

I hate to break it to you, but 74ms is .074 seconds. Less than 1/10 of a second. I know gamers are fast, but not that fast.
If pinging the router from the (bad) satellite takes less than 1/10th of a second (reliably, over a long period of time), then the issue may be external to the Orbi.

Yeah you're right Im not going to notice 0.07s. I was impatient and just recorded the first jump I saw
Here is lines from a test i just did:

Over a minute period, there were 7 pings over 100ms with 534 being the peak.
.1 or .5 may not sound like much of a second but if these are frequent (which they can be) or are consistent, it becomes very disruptive.
Not trying to say the issue is 100% my orbi box, just making sure I have said everything - CrimpOnMar 04, 2021Guru - Experienced User
I agree. You have done a good job documenting the problem 1/2 second for a simple ping within the Orbi network is too long.
The "Daisy Chain" of two WiFi backhaul connections may be a factor. (hot 1:router to satellite 1, hop2: satellite 1 to satellite 2)
Some possibilities come to mind:
- Remove the "Daisy Chain".(uncheck the option on the Orbi web interface, Advanced Tab, Advanced Setup, Wireless Settings (toward the bottom) uncheck Allow Daisy Chain.
This will only work if satellite 2 is able to get a "Good" connection directly to the Orbi router.
Unchecking the box does not cause an immediate change. (Computers are fast, but sometimes they are very slow.)
May have to power the satellites off and back on and wait for them to settle. The "proof" will be on the Orbi Attached Devices page showing both satellites connected to the router.
If satellite 2 turns magenta and reports a "Poor" connection, then this is not going to work.
But, if satellite 2 gets a "Good" connection, maybe the performance will be satisfactory. - Replace the WiFi backhaul with ethernet.
Ideally, directly between the router and satellite 1 and the router and satellite 2.
If that can't be done, then from router to satellite 1 and then satellite 1 to satellite 2.
I keep several long ethernet cables in my "box of computer stuff" to test things such as this. Amazon sells Cat5e 50ft and 100ft ethernet cables for under $20.
I would run cables temporarily (down the hall, up the stairs, etc.) to test it out.
If the result is a dramatic improvement, then it is time to address the cost/benefit issue.
Is improved gaming experience worth the hassle of running ethernet cables through the attic, through the crawl space, down the side of the house (or wherever)? Only you can answer decide.

Hello CrimpOn
Thanks so much for you help over the past days.
Tried the Daisy Chain fix yesterday, no problems so far.
I have had periods of no issues up to a week, so I don't want to mark the thread as solved just yet. I'll wait a few days and if there's no problems then I'll hope it's solved!
Thanks again, hopefully you'll only hear from me once more. - Layla38Mar 08, 2021Tutor

Hello again, the problem has resurfaced.Running long cables from the router to the satellites is sadly not an option for me. I don't own the property and those who do are against the idea and see it as impractical in this household.
If this is a temporary idea to identify the problem then try something else then I am sure I can convince them. If running cables is the permanent solution it is not an option for me. The parents would prefer to buy a new satellite than run cheaper cords.
