    Thanks Plemans,
Ive just come back on to post my solution, which isn'too dissimilar to yours.

After a good few hours of researching/testing. I replaced my orbi mesh with an old asus N66U router where I could separate the 2.4g and 5g networks. The lights worked flawlessly from both the tuya app and alexa.

Based on that I dug an old tp powerline out of the loft and set that up as a 2.4ghz Access Point only (ensuring the channel was distant from the orbi 2.4ghz channel).

I then logged on to the tp powerline on my phone, re-installed the lights to the tp 2.4g network and just for belt and braces, connected my echo show that would control the lights via alexa to the same tp 2.4ghz network. Reconnected my phone to the orbi network and all seems good. Problem solved.

As you said, smart lights etc... don't cope well with meshed networks !
