rbk50 and monitoring network traffic

Background: I have quite a few devices attached to my Orbi router (over 70 in the last pull).  I have updated my firmware to 2.7.0.70.

Problem: The last few days my internet speed from a wifi device (laptop or phone) is under 50 while the speed from anything wired or the speedtest in the router is at 250+.  I've read through the forums and I couldn't find any tools from Netgear that monitor traffic by device but plenty of threads about the absence of such a tool.  Turning off devices one-by-one is not acceptable as it might be more than one device, culprit might change over time and .... and who does that anymore :).

Question:

If the answer is still the same?

Does anybody know of a good system that has the tools needed for today's home?

I've read an article (CNET) that puts the Nest and Eero at the top.  Eero seems to have a tool to look-up by device but I've yet to confirm if Nest's is by device.

If there are any suggested (free or low cost) tools I can add to Orbi I would prefer to do that vs buy new hardware.

Any suggestion/thoughts appreciated.

  • Orbi only has a traffic monitor for over all usage thru the system. Not by device.

      Furrye38,  Thanks for the confirmation.

Do you have any experience with other mesh systems and if they offer this type of tool?

I likely have multiple devices that have caused the traffic to go up, maybe normal, maybe a device that needs a firmware update or something stuck in some sort of routine/error.

I think Orbi is great for the turn-key user with fewer devices but I'm afraid we have out grown it.

Thanks again for your help in the past and now.

Not sure how many devices you have connected to your Orbi. I personally have 25 plus devices connected at any given time with no issues. My company installs mesh systems quite often. We have worked with most all the brands of mesh systems, and i will tell you without a doubt, that the Orbi systems, whether residential or Pro, have far better reliability, performance and power, than all the brands we have installed. We have installed Velop, Nest, Eero, TP-Link, Tenda, Asus and more, and now pretty much exclusively install the Netgear Orbi models. All mesh systems have their issues. Most of the time it is human error or a device or cable causing slowdown or collisions.

You can find 3rd party network traffic monitoring software that will give you the info you need.
