RBR50 dropping internet connection
Hello I have an RBR50 with 2 satellites since 2019. I have the same ISP for the same duration. My RBR50 is connected behind the ISP modem. Firmware version is V2.7.5.4 Everything was working fine f...

Hi,
Thank you for your message; I live in France; my ISP is Nordnet (a subsidary of Orange):
- PON : Huawei EchoLife HG8010H
IF this is in the mix before the Orbi system, Your ISP Modem already has a built in router and wifi. This would be a double NAT (two router) condition which isn't recommended. https://kb.netgear.com/30186/What-is-Double-NAT
https://kb.netgear.com/30187/How-to-fix-issues-with-Double-NAT
Couple of options,
1. Configure the modem for transparent bridge or modem only mode. Then use the Orbi router in router mode. You'll need to contact the ISP for help and information in regards to the modem being bridged correctly.
2. If you can't bridge the modem, disable ALL wifi radios on the modem, configure the modems DMZ/ExposedHost or IP Pass-Through for the IP address the Orbi router gets from the modem. Then you can use the Orbi router in Router mode.
3. Or disable all wifi radios on the modem and connect the Orbi router to the modem, configure AP mode on the Orbi router.

Try option #2 first...Or as suggested, remove the Huawei router and directly connect the Orbi RBR to the modem or ONT.
- Modem : Sagemcom NordnetBox Emotion (I don't have anything else (model number ...) ...)
- The cable between the modem and the RBR router is a cat 6 cable
The last time the problem showed up I could connect my laptop to the network cable to which the RBR router is usually connected and internet connection was ok; I could also verify that my modem was up and running from the ISP web site ... To summarize : internet access was ok up to the ethernet cable to which the RBR router is connected .... so problem is clearly the RBR router which loses the internet connection .... but the strange thing is that a spare RBR router (of the same model, with the same firmware and with the same configuration) presented the exact same problem .... After one day of internet loss (a reboot of the router restored the internet connection for a few minutes but then it dropped again) the problem was gone .... This happens regularly : every 4, 5 or 6 weeks ...
I do not know where to look at and what to do to investigate that problem deeper.
I will do a factory reset and cross fingers ...
Thanks for your help

Hi,
Thanks again for your messages; I tried to drop out my ISP's modem from my network configuration (so connecting the RBR WAN port directly to the ONT)and it seems to work without any additional configuration !
I really feel stupid to not have had that idea before ...
The modem can provide some phone and TV services but I do not need them so not using my modem is possible (btw setting it in bridge mode is not possible and I didn't want to use my RBR as a simple AP (because of the limited configuration options of the modem).
Let's cross fingers and wait for the next problem to not happen ....

Glad you got it working. Please mark your thread as solved so others will know. Be sure to save off a back up configuration to file for safe keeping. Saves time if a reset is needed.

Hi,
Just before closing this thread I wanted to show you the connection status (with my RBR router connected directly to the ONT (so without my ISP modem).
I can see that the lease is very low (5 minutes); is this normal ? Maybe this could have been the cause of my problem (when the ISP modem was still part of my network) : like mentionned already, when I had my problem I could observe that after having rebooted everything, internet connection was ok for a few minutes and then connection was dropped (maybe because of the lease expiration ?)
Yesterday evening I have tested this new configuration and now I have set it up definitively; I will keep an eye on it and check the logs if the problem shows up again.
Thanks

A 5 minute lease is just "asking for trouble". That said, however, it is very common to do this temporarily when a network reconfiguration is imminent. At the university where I worked, bringing a new building on-line caused a major change to the network infrastructure. If we left the DHCP lease at 24 hours, then it would be a full 12 hours before any change we made became implemented. (some devices would renew just minutes after our change, but any device that had just renewed would not do it again for nearly 12 hours.) So, we would set the DHCP lease to 5 minutes for 12 hours and then make our reconfiguration in the middle of the night when almost no one would be using their computers. In 5 minutes the whole campus would get new IP assignments. No one would notice (because they weren't on line). After verifying "all OK", we would change the lease back to 24 hours and in another 5 minutes, the network would be back to normal.
It could be that the ISP was doing something similar and forgot to go back to a longer lease?
