How do I get update if app is having trouble detecting if new update is available. I checked internet and there is an update available. Can I download update to my phone and send to modem using app...

If you want too, you can use a PC or laptop to download FW updates. Download the FW updates from here:
https://www.netgear.com/support/product/RBK50.aspx#download
Use a web browser to apply the FW udpate to the RBR.
