Received email from netgear of firmware updates for satellites and router to 2.3.5.34 (RBR 40) and 2.5.1.8 for (RBS50). My current firmware for (RBR40) is 2.3.5.34 (no update needed) but my RBS50...

Yes, firmware is numbered from most significant digit to least - left to right. So, 2.5. (anything) is more recent than 2.3.(anything).What portion of the number should I focus on the 2.5.... or the .30 at the end? Don't know whether I should do the update on the satellite or not. Can I in fact go from 2.3.5.30 to 2.5.1.8? Yes, I have done this.
Netgear had a horrible experience in late 2019 when they released an update from 2.3.5.30 that completely messed up the Device Naming feature and failed to address complaints about the expired SSL certificate. That firmware update disappeared and in December they released 2.5.1.8. For at least two months, this latest version has been available for download from the Netgear support site, but when users look on the Orbi Firmware Update web page, they do not see it. In the past week or so, users have been commenting on seeing "new firmware" on their Orbi app and getting email about it. MY GUESS, and this is only a guess, is that Netgear has decided the risks for people updating to 2.5.1.8 are not significant and they want to encourage people to do so.
I, personally, have no problems with 2.5.1.8. There are SOME USERS, however, who experience major issues with it. The forum has a LONG post about "2.5.1.8" that you might want to read through.
If your Orbi is doing what you want, there is no urgent need to update the firmware to this release.
