One of my two satellite routers has suddenly started flashing red after solidly working for several months. I have tried the factory reset with no change. I have tried using the TFTP solutions sugges...

tftp can be sensitive to timings and can take a few attempts. I've had to try it a few times on a device to get it to work and I've done this quite a bit.
You can also try nmrpflash.
are you on windows? if so, follow this guide
https://kb.netgear.com/000059634/How-to-upload-firmware-to-a-NETGEAR-router-using-Windows-TFTP
just make sure you enable tftp
https://www.thewindowsclub.com/enable-tftp-windows-10
and here's a video walk through using a tftp client. Use the built in one for windows 10 though. the video is more of an example of how its done.

and if that doesn't work, you can try using nmrpflash

I tried this approach before I posted my message. The problem is that the suggested solution shows the PC USB card connected to the satellite router as active, i.e. will come up saying "unknown network". In my case, the USB adaptor says that the USB cable is not plugged in, even though it is plugged in. Just to be sure, I have tried connecting with a different USB cable, same result. It appears that whatever corruption occurred in the router firmware makes it appear that the satellite is not connected to the PC. If I can't access the satellite router via USB, I don't see how I can update the firmware, meaning the satellite router is not fixable.

You can't do it over usb. You need to use the ethernet connection on the satellite to your computer.

Did you watch the video that walks you through it?

Sorry, incorrect description. I was using ethernet, not USB. I did watch the video and the key difference is that my ethernet adaptor shows that there is no cable attached to the satellite router, instead of showing "unknown network" as in the video. There is in fact an ethernet cable connecting the PC and the RBS50 and changing to a different ethernet cable makes no difference. Since the ethernet adaptor can't see the RBS50, I see no way to upload new firmware to the device.
