I tried to set a static IP address for a raspberry pi 3b+. Tried on the client (dh....conf file - ie instructions here https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentation/configuration/tcpip/) and assigning it from the Mac address at my Orbi router. Both methods seem to give the Pi a static IP. But DNS fails always and I am unable to connect online.
I have one 3b+ and one 4b. Both have IP addresses assigned in the Orbi LAN Setup table, and both have no DNS problems.
The 3b+ is running Pi-Hole, which is a DNS server. Before I made the permanent assignments, the Pi's both worked fine with DHCP from the Orbi pool.
I know this doesn't help solve the problem. Is DNS the only thing that fails? For example, can the Pi ping DNS servers on the internet?

Hi Yes, that was what i was trying to do to setup pihole.... i found i can't even ping to an IP address either! But, I am connected on wi-fi.. the pi shows as a client in the orbi client list..

I set my Pi's up as "headless" and use PuTTY to SSH into them for management (or VNC for graphic interface).
Does this Pi have a keyboard/display or it is headless?
By any chance is Access Control enabled on the Orbi?

access control disabled.

Can other devices on the network ping the Pi?
There are commands to disable/enable network interfaces.
What does the ifconfig command show for the wlan0 interface?
(IP, subnetmask, etc.)
I would be tempted to flash a new SD card and start over. With no network access, Pi-hole installation cannot have proceeded very far.
