Technically can 2 tri-band routers be jointed to replicate Orbi?

Set aside the costs, technically can I link 2 tri-band routers, e.g. R8500, to replicate an Orbi?  Say to create a dedicated high speed 5G backhaul at 2166Gbps to link the 2 routers and leave 1000Gbps + 2166Gbps for clients, as vs. Orbi's 1733Gbps backhaul and 400Gbps + 866Gbps for clients?  Technically, can this be done and if yes, how?  If not, why?  Thanks.

  • It won't work with stock firmware because Netgear does not support wireless repeater functionality on their routers.  The closest you can get is wireless bridge but this only supports wired clients (i.e. wireless backhaul with wired clients).  DD-WRT might work, but considering that it doesn't hardware acceleration and the cost of 2 R8500s, it's not a win.
