AT&T Nighthawk Dropping Internet Regularly

I haven't had any issues with this hotstpot, and as of a month ago, it REGULARLY drops the internet.  I have connected directly to it and through ethernet and confirmed that the router is simply losing internet.  There is no indication otherwise when it is 'disconnected' because I have 4 bars of LTE when the internet drops out.

How do I figure out what's wrong with this?  It sucks to have to reboot the router every 10 minutes or every 10 minutes when watching movies.

Current Firmware: ntg9x50c_12.05.05.14

      Oh my god.

Can I use my ac1900 that is connected to the mr1100 and set up my own VPN to work around the issue ? If so, how do I get started?

        Details.

Who is your provider?  Is it AT&T?  Is this a Connected Car or iPhone tablet plan?  If so, then it may be explainable.  If not, then there is something else going on.  I can guess all day long without pertinent information available.

Details.  Details.  Write a mini-novel of details.  "More details" isn't as good as "more + more + more + more details".

Assuming that a VPN may (or may not?) fix this issue, then yes, you could connect a router to the MR1100 and disable wifi/ethernet standby/DHCP in the MR1100 and enable IP Passthrough in the MR1100.  Some routers don't have enough CPU power to encrypt VPN packets fast enough and will slow down the speed.  There are two choices.  Either use high-encryption OpenVPN on a router with built in hardware encryption (like the Asus AC86U) or use a slow normal router with almost-no encryption (very crackable) PPTP VPN.  Since you are coming from "no VPN", it makes sense to not care about weak VPN encryption.  After all, if you were walking on foot all your life and someone gave you a bicycle, would you complain that the bicycle is not as fast as a car?  Especially when a bicycle is faster than your feet which you are accustomed to using?
