Can Netgear Nighthawk M5 (MR5200) tether with utp or only with USB-C? And Netgear M6?

I want to use a mobile router (ie M5) to connect to a switch or laptop with UTP.

Can Netgear Nighthawk M5 (MR5200) handle this or do you always have to go over USB-C?

  • The MR5200 has an ethernet port. You can connect a switch/laptop to it if you'd like.

Thx for this quick reply, I did try but I get no data through to the laptop.
If I connect an utp to our cable modem, the M5 works perfectly and I can use M5 wifi using the cable router internet connection: so the hardware seems fine.

But the way around doesn’t seem to work.
If I do troubleshooting in windows it states: looks like a big connector is connected but date looks like a telephone connector instead of utp…
Anyone an idea what goes wrong?

        General advise for the M2, M5, M6, ....

Use a router, because there is ony one IP address available ... whatever the Mobile carrier does assign:

        1. Perform a factory reset

        2. Connect a WiFi device to the M2, M5, M6, ... and run a speed test to make sure M2, M5, M6, ... is under good coverage and can get decent speed.

        3. Log in to M2, M5, M6, ...  WebUI to enable IP passthrough

        4. Disable the power-saving to avoid unexpected disconnections

        5. Connect Ethernet cable from M2, M5, M6, ... Ethernet port to your router

        6. Power on M2, M5, M6, ... then your router. The Router WAN/Internet port will get an IP address by DHCP.
