Flashing red light and how to update firmware

Please help.

1) Does anyone know why my router switches from a flashing blue light to a red light? Router still appears to work fine from what I can see but the switch over can sometimes last for days before going back to a blue light.

2) How do I update the firmware? When I click on check for updates it just says checking for updates but it never ends, unless I reboot the router.
