Aparently, acording the Netgear tech support.... because its a Telstra model, Telstra themselves are fully resposible for the trouble shooting and warranty issues, so thats why the serial number cant be registered with Netgear themselves.
Unfortunatly, Telstra tech support is pretty bad, so wish me luck.

Don't you have any government agency or consumer organisation that you can contact about what happened to you? Because you were mislead, and couldn't find that information. I did a search on Telstra but couldn't find that restriciton. If Netgear is mentioned on your product than it is a Netgear device, also when it arrived in a Netgear box. It would be different that on the box Telstra is mentioned.

Thank you for your advise nielsvds.
You are absolutly right.
It is very misleading, & I have been passed around between Telstra & Netgear and they are both not easy to deal with. We do have a couple of (dare i say) under-resourced Gov bodies that may help. But thats hour/ days being on the phone on hold & being passed around from dept to dept.
For the record, my Netgear M5 is overheating (but doesnt display and overheating warning), even with battery out & on USB-c power only.
When it overheats, the 2.4ghz wifi band's "internet flow" cuts out, (even though the wifi is still connected to the device). Whats strange is the internet is still avaliable through the ethernet cable & anyone on the 5ghz band. Also, when its hot, the screen on the M5 wont display the normal usage & days left info, and says instead "Data usage info unavailiable at this time"
Telstra's technical support is absolutly terrible, goes only as far as just a "full reset".Telstra said they could send it away for repair, but will probably take 3-4 weeks, but wont supply a replacement unit in the interim. They said its probably quicker to contact Netgear direct, and thats when i encountered the "cant register serial number" problem.
So they expect me to go without internet for a month because of a possible fault, that no tech in store or on phone can be bothered with trouble shooting.
I might have to start another topic on here with the actual "overheating /2.4ghz band internet cutting out" problem itself.
Thanks for your suggestion though. cheers
