have you tested with a new sim?
i originally thought i had to unlock it with telstra and get a pin and they charged me for one but after alot of websearching and help from the forums it turns out it didnt need to be unlocked.

oh, yes, that was my next question to confirm if your device is actually locked. Since you can insert new SIM card without problem, that device is unlocked when you got it at first place.

Thanks for your help. I believe it is firmware in the Nighthawk that locks the IMEI to the Telstra network. That is what the unlock code is supposed to remedy. I have added and made active the APN for the

Please just do the following to check whether the device is locked to Telstra or not.
1. Insert a non-Telstra SIM card
2. Power on the device
3. Check on Touch UI or WebUI whether there is an option to ask you to enter MEP Lock.
If you see the option, please contact Telstra to get the unlock code if the device is already out of contact. Then enter the code from the UI, the device will be unlocked and can be used with other SIM card,
Thanks

Thanks John but I do not get the unlock prompt anywhere that I can find. Telstra gave me an unlock code yesterday but after 4 hours was unable to advise how to enter the unlock code. I have a Belong sim installed which works fine in another router. I power up the device and I get a "SIM not installed" message. I can then connect through browser and wifi to open the device settings but no unlock prompt found anywhere in settings.

SIM not installed is different issue now. You have to resolve the issue so that the device can detect the SIM card before you are prompted to enter the MEP locking code.
Please check whether the SIM connector PINs got deformed too much. If so, try to lift them up a bit carefully. Please also check whether you inserted the SM card in correct direction.
Thanks

Thanks John. Given your confirmation that it must be indeed a SIM problem I removed the SIM, checked the connection, all looked ok, reinserted the SIM, turned it on and bingo, I am now connected to Belong. It must have just been a seating of the SIM card although I have tried the same process a number of times over the last couple of days. Thank you again.
