If you are not using at&t SIM card, it won't update the firmware ...
you can manually upgrade on your own or contact some professional for the paid service to update the device

you do manual update if you have the actual firmware file. that is likely not the case because ATT does not release these files to the public. Like what was previously said, you need to be on the ATT network for the device to auto-update. ATT branded devices are best purchased if you're intending to use it with an ATT sim. I may work on other network SIMs but it's not going to be an optimal experience.
