netgear MR1100 hotspot overheating, solution - cooling case with fan

The Netgear MR 1100 hotspot gets hot very easily, and shuts down.

I have designed and printed a Cooling case that prevents the hotspot from overheating. The fan is powered by the onboard usb a port on the MR1100.

the print designs, photos and instructions can be found here https://www.printables.com/model/221316-netgear-mr100-hotspot-cooler

or here

https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:5404536

The design and print files are free, if you have access to a 3d printer

This Cooling case is designed to keep it cool even when under heavy load.  A small 40mm noctua fan is attached to the bottom of the case and is powered by the USB A output from the MR 1100.  A right angle usb A connector is used to connect the fan to the usb a outlet.  Cut the female side of the connector off and connect the Black and Red wires from the USB A male side to the corresponding black and Red wires of the Noctua 40mm fan.  The fan runs completely silent using a small amount of power.  It can run off the MR100 battery, or while connected to USB C power.

Needs 4 x 3.0 x 14mm cap screws to attach the fan to the bottom

See Amazon photos for the fan and the usb connector

  • Great solution.

As a alternative suggestion should some users not have the resources to acquire this fan cooler case style part, one can put the MR on top of a small usb laptop cooler for additional cooling. Or maybe place a small usb fan pointed at the MR while in operation.

thats exactly what i was doing until i printed this case.  I wanted a better solution and I love designing and 3d printing so it wasnt a waste of time.  I understand most people dont have a 3d printer and are not going to build this but at least they know there is a solution is out there.

      Thanks for your post.
