Netgear Nighthawk M5 MR5200 WAN issue
Hi,
I have a Netgear Nighthawk M5 MR5200 (ip address 192.168.1.1) that is working with the IP passthrough and it is connected to the WAN port of an Asus AX11000 (ip address 192.168.2.1). I can access to both routers browser pages when the connection is working.
Everything is working but often (maybe every 1-2-3 days) happens that internet gets disconnected.
When this happens I cannot access to the Netgear Nighthawk page (192.168.1.1) but I can only access to the Asus router page (192.168.2.1) that is showing as WAN IP the address 0.0.0.0.
If I unplug the RJ45 cable from the WAN port and plug again nothing changes.
The only thing I can do is restarting the Netgear Nighthawk and all start to work again.
Is this a software bug or a bad configuration?
Thank you for your attention,
Andrea

Hello,
Same problem after 2 days i lost the ethernet port connection on My M5200 with my Orbi system.
All firmware is up to date with an orange france SIM card.
Do you have any quick solution to resolve the problem and can I connected remotely to M5 to resolve the problem as I'm travelling actually.
Thank you in advance for your answer.

The WAN port stability issue hasn't been fully resolved yet. Targeting to address it in the next release.
There is no way to remotely connect back to reset the device for now. But here are 2 suggestions to work around the issue temperarily.
1. When the WAN port is down, most likely the WiFi and WWAN connection are still working normally. You can set up a smart power plug connecting to M5's WiFi and power the device as well. If the WAN port is down, you can remote reset the power to the device by reset the smart power plug.
This workaround may be more ideal for remote setup since even more advanced home router may sometimes need to reset in order to resolve some connectivity issues.
2. For M5 device, with the latest FW upgrade, it support Netgear Insight Pro service, which allows the user to remotey connect to the M5 as long as M5 has WWAN data connection. It is subscription based service. For one device, the monthly subscription is around 2 dollars depending on the region. You can refer to the link below for details.
https://www.netgear.com/business/services/insight/subscription/
Please make sure you subscribe to Insight Pro service and turn on monthly subscription.
Thanks

Is there an ETA for the frmware relase to rectify this issue ?

Same issue here in Germany! When can we expect a solution? It has been over a year now.
I to have had persistent and ongoing wan outages (reported to Netgear mid December), but I don't use IP passthrough.
The outages are random (sometimes 3-4 days between drop-outs, and sometimes multiple dropouts in a single day, but usually up for 2 days before a reboot is needed).
Sometimes both the web interface and the M5's wifi are inaccessible (usually requiring two reboots before the system recovers completely), but usually a single reboot through the web interface is adequate to restore the WAN link when the internet is down. Sometimes the internet is down, despite the router reporting that it has a 4G connection (per Netgear advice, I've locked the router to 4G, and set ethernet standby to disabled).
I don't believe that a carrier idle time-out is the cause of my problems, as I have had outages occur during conference calls and VPN sessions during the day, and where I have configured a device to send ping traffic every 5 minutes (to be fair, most outages _do_ occur overnight, but I've long given up creating artificial traffic to see if this helps).
I don't have the option to move to a data only SIM (contract lock-in.... 4G is my only home internet option), but definitely going to explore the factory reset option discussed earlier in this thread. Still amazed that there is no syslog logging facility to assist with troubleshooting.
Finally, I would say that my M1 router was way more reliable than the M5, and may yet be put back into production. Not sure what I would do with the M5 (I couldn't in good conscience resell something I knew to be unreliable, and I can't return the unit).
[edit:typos, clarity]
1 YEAR passed and this issue is not resolved. I just trashed my money for this thing. Thank you netgear, I will make you a real good marketing campaign.
Following up on the factory reset (post 67 in this thread). It has not resolved the internet outage issue.

Seems no update from Netgear team (even the progress update), I have switched to Linksys fgw3000. Sometimes the WAN will drop, but it will recover within 30 sec.
JohnPenghas Netgear made any progress, are there any updates on this issue? When can we expect a firmware update with some more reliable operation for Netgear's flagship Mobile Router?
Same here, random deconnection of the WAN port. IP passthrough worse than router.
(setup : Mr5200 is hooked to a sinology 2600 on its WAN part, and my DSL router on the secondary LAN for the Synology for fallback ... and it fallbacks a lot)
Having a fixed DHCP may have helped here in my case to force the DHCP of the Synology ... but well IP passthrough should work....
For now very disappointed in the product stability, especially for the price (750 euros here in France), but not really any other solution.
- brook724AspirantIt’s been over a year and passthrough still doesn’t function properly? Where is the fix?

I'm having a similar issue.
IP Passthrough on.
DHCP left on.
Ethernet standby off.
Connected to a TP-Link ER605 via WAN.
Goes offline every few hours and reports IP address as 0.0.0.0.
In response to a previous post, I don't think purchasing a smart plug, to power cycle the device, or a subscription to Netgears cloud management are reasonable - this function should work.
Can you give us a timeline for a fix? Or should I return these for a refund (not working as expected / faulty)?
- jpparkerjrAspirantI used my m1 in pass through with no issues but lightning fixed it not in a good way like I said I have been able to establish decent connections by turning off pass through and using an extender because it has got to have the worst range of any wireless device I have ever seen. If you are not in the same room with it it drops out
Amazing that there is no progress on this. Tech support has conversation with me foe months’ made some tests with them … but still not working at all…my m5 can’t be used nor returned. Perhaps I should get a M2, but not sure it is better

Not to hijack the post, but I'm just looking for some clarity while setting up my new home network and would appreciate some feedback.
Currently I'm utilizing a Nighthawk M5 (Telstra) > Cisco IE 3000 switch. I am using the Nighhawk as my WiFi router as we were living in a very small apartment, and utilising the switch for ethernet connections.
That has changed now as we have moved into a much larger house. I'm looking to update the switch and add a few AP's, however I am greatly interested in adding an external router and using the IP Passthrough of the Nighthawk. After reading this thread, I can see how much of an issue I'm about to have.My question is, what are the main advantages of using another router? Why do you not just use the Nighthawk M5? I don't think I need a VPN or anything else fancy. I do realise there are a few restrictions with the Nighhawk, like limited Port Forwarding ability.
Thanks in advance.

Just find that the admin create a new post on 2021-12-08 to consolidate the issues, seems the representative(s) don't inform the customers in this post. Could we assume the issues in this post are fully noted and Netgear working on the solution?
Hi Guy, if you still facing the problem(s) with your M5, please leave your message at the following links.
- jpparkerjrAspirantOk the other post linked says it’s closed also when you click on solution you just get a problem post not a solution. the wan pass through is still an issue not as bad as once was but still requires daily reboot because all the isp ip addresses go to zeros and will not populate without reboot to hotspot i never reboot router. It’s very unstable unless you sit right beside it for WiFi 5GHZ extender does help but nothing like pass through when it works my router covers my home with 5GHZ and have no connection issues. just trying to use hotspot by itself sucks speeds are much slower and even with extender in some rooms I have to use 2.5GHZ which is much slower like 25meg vs 220meg on SpeedTest if you are on att Watch SpeedTest.net it will show good when fast.com and Google show slow. Though that seems to have been corrected as of late. Not to mention even though att shows 5g in my area there is none
