Thanks - I tried at a different location, but with the same cable, and it seems to work. I have no idea why it doesn't work at my house... any idea where this could be? Electricity is brand new as the house was rebuilt recently.

thats a bit suspicious if it works elsewhere but not at your home. The power supply doesn't care a whole lot provided the power is in spec. 

Got a multimeter you can check your power at your home with?
