They do get very hot. It is due to the 5G chips by Qualcomm that are being used in these mobile hotspot. It is very unlikely to catch fire because as you have mentioned it will shut itself down when it gets too hot. But I agree it can be a big nuisance if it keeps dropping the connection. Unfortunately this is a known thing and that's why there are temperature mitigation features in the firmware. Best you can do is to provide a fan to constantly blow ambient air into the back of the device to help it cool off and blow off enough heat so it does not get hot enough to trigger a disconnect.
