Nighthawk m1 mr100 - external antenna setup

Can anyone please tell me how to setup the Nighthawk MR1100 to make the most of an External Antenna.

I have attached a two cable External Antenna to the Nighthawk M1 MR1100 and it makes absolutly no difference to the signal strength. 

I downloaded the Nighthawk MR1100 manual from Netgear and on page 11 near the top, it states 'For More Information about connecting an external antenna, see External Antenna on page ?'

So not too helpful. :-)
