Question About Modems and Routers

So I'm thinking about upgrading my old slow router from Verizon. Do I need both a modem and a router or can I just get a router? I'm a complete dumbass when it comes to networking so help is appreciated. Thanks.

    It would help to know more about your "Verizon" connection.  Is it fiber?  Is it DSL?  Is it MoCA?  The router you currently have, does the WAN (internet) side screw in (coax)?  Is it an ethernet cord (large phone cord)?  Or is is a landline phone cord (regular phone cord)?  Do you have a fiber network interface in your garage/basement that feeds this box?
