Reboot and no boot M1 issue again

And again. In the middle of the day, on a sailing trip along the coast, router does not boot anymore. Of course no wifi, so netgear app not usable. Factory reset does not help. Latest firmware present. Restarting after battery removal results in a couple of reboot cycles, but then the device shuts down. Expensive piece turned useless...

I get the impression that this device is modern electronic garbage. No error messages? No way to reinstall the firmware without a wifi connection? No low-level acces to diagnose?

  • Hi,

It is simple. The USB charging provided with the router has an output power of 5V/1A and it is not enough power to keep the device running without the battery in it. This output was designed to keep the unit pluged in with the battery inserted so they both provide power to the unit. If you want to use the unit without the battery you should increase the output power.

Solution: Buy a USB charger (or a surge power strip with USB ports). Try to get one that deliver at least 5V/2.1A "Per Port" (not total). Ideally 5V/2.4A "Per Port" and hopfully with a smart feature that detects your device’s specific charging requirements (Smart IQ, Smart ID, etc... every manufacturer calls it diferently, but it is the same stuff). I spoke with the Netgear Technical Department and they told me that the device won't have any damage with that configuration or any other as long the unit you buy is AC and meet the local specs of where your router was bought for (if you bougth your router in Australia, use a charger/strip that meets that electrical imput requirements. If you bought it in US the same rule, etc.etc.etc.....)

    Hope this help!

  • Sorry, but is not that simple. The power is NOT the issue (powerful charger is there, battery fully loaded).
The device REBOOTS several times, stops at the same place (turning symbol) and then shuts down.
